Friends of Understanding Disabilities
Celebrating 30 years of leadership in disability awareness education and providing ongoing organizational stability
For a remarkable 30 years, Understanding Disabilities, Inc. (UD) has provided disability awareness programming to the students of Reading Public Schools, encouraging an awareness of all that people with disabilities can do and promoting a culture of inclusion and respect. Studies show that good relationships, a healthy school climate, and student well being are necessary factors for increased learning to take place. UD adds a unique level of understanding to our school culture that increases acceptance and respect, paving the way for increased learning. Wonderfully, UD benefits all students, children with as well as children without disabilities. Our students gain from their opportunity to look beyond a person’s disability, to understand that we are all the same inside.
With school budget cuts six years ago, UD volunteers added fundraising to their jobs of running and organizing 150 classes per year and training 250 volunteers. The quality of the program remains high but it is time now to make necessary changes to our curriculum to meet the needs of today’s changing population. UD’s breakthrough curriculum ideas were recently recognized by a local foundation that has agreed to fund them. All that is left then is help funding our operational budget.
Friends of UD will provide the financial stability for years to come, enabling UD to focus on helping children learn we are all the same inside and create an appropriate curriculum to do so.
We invite you to partner in our success. Will you be one of 100 Friends of UD who each contribute $250 annually toward disability awareness programming? Your gift will allow the next generation of students an opportunity unlike any other. UD vows to take your investment seriously and we invite you to share your skills and experience. You will:
I hope that when you make your gifts to Understanding Disabilities, you know that you're making a truly remarkable gift - the gift of education, a gift that changes lives. Our students, those with disabilities and those without, depend on it and deeply appreciate it.
With sincere thanks and warm wishes,
