Understanding Disabilities depends on donations to meet our budget each year and continue our programming.

-Erin Reilly, Reading parent

"I am so pleased that Understanding Disabilities is available to our community. I believe my older sons are more aware of the differences in others because of their brother's disability, but I am thrilled that other children are being exposed to this subject as well."

Understanding Disabilities, Inc., is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that serves all students in the Reading public schools and the Reading community at large. Our mission is to educate children about disabilities to help them see beyond people's disabilities and to focus on the ways we are all the same inside.

Celebrating 30 years in the schools, we highlight all that people with disabilities can do and we promote a culture of inclusion and respect. Our curriculum provides information about a range of physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities to improve students’ school, social, and learning experiences. All students benefit from UD programming, but none more than those with disabilities.

Disability awareness programming is especially vital in inclusive classrooms where children who receive special education services are included in general education classrooms.   UD helps promote the good relationships and student well being that are necessary for increased learning to take place.
